St. Moritz is globally known for its elegance, luxurious resorts, and elite sporting events. Known as the birthplace of winter tourism, it has always been a magnet for those seeking the best life has to offer. Among its iconic attractions, the St. Moritz Snow Polo World Cup is arguably the most famous. However, one event outshines the World Cupp in both exclusivity and tradition – the Cresta Run. Established in 1884 it offers a raw, adrenaline-fueled experience which is considered the birthplace of modern-day skeleton. Build for the daring British tourists in St. Moritz, it is deeply rooted in tradition and high society, as famous participants include H.R.H. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and British Olympic gold medalist Lord Clifton Wrottesley.
The event itself is open to anyone daring enough to throw themselves down the 1.2-kilometer icy run with its 10 infamous curves reaching up to 130 km/h and accepting the risk of flying out of the open run. After completing five training sessions that run could be yours. But more importantly, it provides the opportunity to join the supplementary list, from which the members of the legendary St. Moritz Tobogganing Club (SMTC), founded in 1887, are chosen. Membership follows by invitation alone, to this day about 1300 members have made the cut.
The SMTC proudly upholds its distinct club colors of gold and scarlet, symbolizing the daring spirit and aristocratic heritage of the club. Earning the right to wear the club colors is a significant honor. It is not automatically granted upon membership but must be earned. Achieving milestones such as completing the full course, participating in key races, or demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship can qualify a member to wear prestigious colors. Special ties are also part of the club’s tradition, each with unique patterns and colors representing different levels of achievement or specific honors. For instance, the “Shuttlecock Tie” is awarded to those who have taken the infamous fall at the Shuttlecock corner, a badge of both bravery and camaraderie.
What distinguishes the SMTC is its authentic essence. In an era dominated by commercialized sports, the Cresta Run remains fiercely independent. The natural ice track is rebuilt by hand each year, demonstrating the craftsmanship of its caretakers. The club’s historic clubhouse serves as the social heart, filled with memorabilia, trophies, and photographs that chronicle the Cresta’s illustrious past.
The SMTC’s enduring relevance lies in its ability to preserve the charm of a bygone era while nurturing a community bonded by shared passion. It is not just about the adrenaline rush; it’s about belonging to a lineage that values heritage, sportsmanship, and the understated elegance of tradition. It serves as a demonstration that exclusivity does not need to be defined by luxury brands or opulent parties—but by being part of a living history.
